In the quiet months…

The first few months of 2025 has been about planning, tidying, setting goals and lots of knitting…

One of my main goals at the start of the year was to increase my journal presence and blogging but as always ‘life’ has gotten in the way

Early 2025 at emma hewlett floral design

Wedding flowers often go quiet in the early months of the year and where some choose to tap into Valentine’s day and Mother’s day, I take the opportunity to rest and recharge. The wedding world is full on and in high season we do not stop with multiple weddings in a week and one job rolling into the next.

Its rare to get a day off in the middle of wedding season and being a mother of 2 I always want to make to most of the down time and enjoy watching the kids doing the things they love.

This year started a little differently for us as our 14 year old daughter continues to struggle with an illness that saw her admitted to hospital in February. I spent time with her in hospital doing admin inbetween. She was home pretty quickly but off school whilst we navigated things. Thankfully this week she has gone back to school full time and hope that things continue in the right direction. I have also manage to get the time to watch my 12 year old boy play basketball and rugby which has been delightful. I now find myself first aid trained to assist on the rugby field…This is what happens when I don’t do flowers. Always finding other things to do.

Some of you that follow me on Instagram may have also noticed I’ve been busy knitting lots of things. My gorgeous friend Lauren Aston has finally got me involved and working for her business which works wonderfully in my quiet flower months.

So I’ve been knitting until my arms have wanted to fall off!! I’ve designs a couple of patterns which you can buy from Lauren Aston Designs and I also knitted a giant scarf that Jack Whitehall wore on The Brits… many late nights getting that ready in time

Early flowers

I can never keep my hands away from flowers for too long so as soon as the first British bulbs started flowering Georgina from River Garden flowers gave me my flower fix.

March also saw the opportunity to attend the local growers open event which is always lovely. Its a morning of chatting with our fabulous growers, talking trends and colour forecasts and meeting fellow florists too.

Down in Devon we are so lucky to have many growers on our doorstep allowing us to really work hard to promote British in our wedding designs

My fab flower pal , Liv from Stowford Flowers and I took a day trip up to London to visit the FLOWERS exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery.

I have a strong love of art and so this exhibition was literally made for me combing art and flowers. From the moment Liv and I walked in and read the introduce to the exhibition we were hooked. So many stunning pieces including the mind blowing dried flower installation by Rebecca Louise Law. I’ve studied her art for years so it was wonderful to see one of her pieces in real life.

Early April was my birthday and also my father in law’s 70th (we share the same birthday) and as a treat the family took at trip to South Africa.

We had beautiful weather and even better scenery. What an honour to have to opportunity to spend time away with he family and experience some wonderful sights including local flora and wildlife.

And finally…

Before weddings truly kick off this weekend, my daughter and I managed a quick visit to Tulip Fest at Strawberry Fields in Lifton on Sunday. It was to last day of the very Instagram worthy tulip field. We even took the dogs to enjoy the sun and bright colours. There really is nothing like a field full of flowers all gently blowing in the Spring breeze.

Tulips aren’t often a flower we use lots in wedding flowers but a great one to consider if you are looking at getting married in Spring. the colour choices are endless and some double tulip varieties are so blousy.

Remember that the Emma Hewlett Floral Design diary is open for 2026!! Although the diary is open please note that we are only taking on a select number of weddings currently so if you are keen to work with us, don’t delay in getting in touch.

Thanks for reading.
